Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 52, case # 52
CHAPTER 1
Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries
Diagnosed stifle injury
Case # 52
trimmed for three years
The mini gelding was diagnosed with a stifle injury on the right hind as a two-year-old. After x-rays and ultra sound the owner was also told that the pelvis was crooked and dropped down to the right. Nobody made a connection to the hooves. The fact that the hooves did not support the bone column of the legs stayed unnoticed. I found the back of the hooves undeveloped and atrophied. The pony braced on the medial side of the hoof capsule of both hinds (holding the lateral side off the ground) and toed out. He took the overload of the situation with the right hind by placing the foot far underneath the belly most of the time which let him drop his pelvis.
Once such an enforced decision is made the horse cannot change it unless the horse gets the right help to develop the back of the feet. It is always about all four hooves. In this case I found the back of the front hooves atrophied as well. Immediately after my first trim (mimicking natural wear patterns) the pony responded with healing. Frogs, heel bulbs, digital cushions and internal structures were visibly increasing. The long toes in both hinds shortened via divergent hooves. The hooves shifted further under the bone column of the legs. The upright front hooves naturalized as well via divergent hooves.
Sadly, I was only able to accompany the pony for a little over three years.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.
What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.
Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
