Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 49, case # 49

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Fault in the conformation – standing under/standing out, x-legs

I found the underlying issue for most all conformational faults to be atrophy of the back of the foot.

Case # 49

Brune

trimmed from October 2013 until 2023; consultation visits until February 2025

Andalusian horse Brune was born in 2009 and raised in Texas. I started trimming him in October of 2013 after he moved to Nova Scotia, Canada, with his mother and brother as well as his human family.

Based on Brune's stance (both pair of legs were standing under) it was very difficult to pick up his hooves and to actually trim. Time and patience brought us along. The atrophy of the back of his hooves was hidden well. The frog material was thick and fleshy but very strange to my eyes. At some point the bulbs opened up and began to fill out. The hooves shifted under the bone column of the legs more and more. Brune got out of the mountain-goat-stance. He transitioned out of the fault of standing under which was not his conformation.

August 2023

Brune was schooled in classical dressage. My client was able to feel (riding Brune) that her horse re-adjusted his body after each trim. Brune was also trail ridden on rocky mountain trails entirely barefoot. He lived a life of 24/7 freedom on a beautiful, rugged track on a mountain side with an abundance of herbs and shrubs.

Please enjoy various images of Brune’s stunning hooves.

Brune took me out on a trail ride over a rugged mountain path to the ocean in August 2020

Sadly, Brune had to be euthanized following an accidental injury in February 2025. ♥

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
