Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 59, case # 59

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Ringbone/sidebone/ossification/arthritis

Case # 59

trimmed for seven years

The pathological picture in this case, a gelding in his teens, was very similar to Belle’s (case # 56). He stood in a lunge with the right front behind and leaned on the lateral side as well as the toe of the hoof capsule. He braced the situation with the right hind and left front. The horse's chest muscles were very weak. His hind end was very weak. Trimming was a challenge as he could not bend the right front leg.

I considered the fundamental cause for the severe ossification in the right front to be atrophy in the back of all four hooves (frog, bulbs, internal structures).

Right front from behind

The tips of the “false” heels were bruised, flared, bent and grown in; the white line was partially warped and atrophied; the outer outside walls were bruised; the hooves did not support the bone column of the legs.

Right front — two years after my first trim

Right front — three years after my first trim

Right front — almost seven years after my first trim: medial heel is emerging from further back via a divergent hoof; bulbs are building; central sulcus of the frog is filling out

I witnessed a lot of fourth dimensional healing changes happening with this horse. Hoof mass shifted around the coffin bones. New hooves emerged from further back as divergent hooves. The feet were able to support the bone column more and more. The bulbs were getting stronger. A lot of the bruising on the outside walls vanished. The horse came out of the lunge with the right front. The right hind and the left front leg straightened out.

Seven months after my first trim — still standing in a lunge

Nine months after my first trim

Twenty-six months after my first trim

Seventy-five months after my first trim

Right front eighty-two months after my first trim: the hoof capsule increased in mass on the medial side

Right front — view from above — eighty-two months after my first trim: the hoof capsule increased in mass on the medial side

I was only able to trim this horse for seven years. Sadly, there was not enough time to find out if the right front would have released the ossification.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
