Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 17, case #17
Author: Gudrun Buchhofer
Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.
What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.
CHAPTER 1
Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries
Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves
Case # 17

“Lucy is my fifteen-year-old off-the-track Thoroughbred (OTTB). Lucy is a daughter of the Irish bred race stallion Theatrical. She came to me when she was nine years old. Lucy had severely pigeon-toed and flat front hooves which heels and bulbs were underdeveloped. Her hinds were underdeveloped as well. I had what I thought was a very good farrier. However, every time he trimmed her, he made her extremely sore. This would usually last until a week before the next trim came around. I had to boot her to ride.
Fast forward to having Gudrun trim her, Lucy has never had to go though the pain of the previous farrier, as the trim was different. Through Gudrun I learned about the importance of diet, trim and management for the equine species. So, I decided to make the necessary changes for my horses. What a difference it has made.
Lucy is moving pain free on a track system and is able the be ridden out without boots. All of her hooves began opening up at the frogs and heels. They started to grow and expand. She still has a long way to go, but slowly the pigeon-toed front hooves have been moving to align themselves under her bone column as where they should have been from birth.
Lucy has been becoming more freer in her shoulders, where once was so tight she could barely move to turn herself. Lucy has never again been foot sore as she was before all these changes.”

The hinds were very weak (weak fetlocks; weak internal structures; ossification — side bone/ring bone)
Hinds July 2018
There was a major abscess in the left hind in August 2023: not only the entire lateral side but also way above the cornet band. Our guess is release of ossification with the abscess because from then on there is space to “wiggle” the hoof capsule when before it was frozen.

The fundamental issue with all four of Lucy’s hooves was atrophy.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
