Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 42, case # 42

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Fault in the conformation – standing under/standing out, x-legs

I found the underlying issue for most all conformational faults to be atrophy of the back of the foot.

Case # 42

Fred

trimmed from August 2020 until present 2025

Horses and donkeys are born with long hooves. The length is needed to secure a save passing through the birth canal. At that moment in time the hooves are diving devices. They are meant to be worn down and the back of the foot to be finalized after birth. If this projected process fails the hooves go into atrophy.

Miniature pony Fred arrived at my clients when he was eleven months old. He came with x-legs and long slipper feet in the front. This was very hard on his knee joints. Fred held his hind legs spread out wide. The right hind was the weaker one. His right hind stifle would snatch when picking up his foot. The hind end in general was very weak. The medial heel bulb of the right hind was bruised.

Right hind May 2021— the medial heel bulb and the tip of the medial heel are bruised

The fundamental issue for Fred's situation was atrophy of his hooves. For the first eleven months of his life Fred lived in a stall on shavings.

The environment at his forever home was created according to my recommendations. The floor of the run-in shelter was textured with crusher dust and the paddock with fine gravel. Then a beautiful track was built and textured with crusher dust. Fred and his buddy Barney (blog 10 case # 10) are racing and playing on the track all the time. It is heart warming to watch.

July 2022 — one divergent hoof at a time hoof horn shifted around the coffin bone, the legs began to straighten.

The Natural Trim, a fairly natural diet, movement on the track and the environment saved the bodies of their two youngsters. The owners are committed to daily walks and training sessions.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
