Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer — Afterword
Afterword
Many of my client horses were given up by professionals in various degrees. For example:
The animal was diagnosed with an incurable and/or deteriorating hoof situation
Pathology or flaws in the conformation were categorized as inheritance
The suggestion to euthanize the animal was given
Part III of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul was written to show the horse’s incredible abilities to heal. Healing from atrophy in the back of the foot via divergent hooves will eventually bring damage and trauma to light. Some of the scenarios do not look pretty but they need to be shared to highlight the ugly picture from humans failing the animals in the first hours of their lives. Given the necessary healing time, we can witness the fascinating finalization of the back of the hoof, the building of thick digital cushions, the emerging of true heels, the completion of the variant capsule angle-of-growth, the appearance of the natural arch in the quarters as well as balanced growth and wear patterns.
However, first and foremost, Hoof, Body & Soul was written as a clarification of fact about the need for prevention. The cases presented are supporting my wake-up call to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys. In order to prevent injury, pain and pathology in the first place, changing our way of horse keeping from the hour of birth is inevitable.
In each of my cases all four hooves were involved (first with the injury and then the healing) and so was the whole body. A holistic view is needed (unless there is a direct injury) instead of isolating one area from the rest of the body.
From the time I took over their hoof care, most all horses I work on did not need any hoof protection. I do not work with pads, glue on shoes or hoof casts. A couple of my clients bought boots for riding but it turned out the horses were able to perform barefoot. One horse with sensitivity from dietary mistakes was ridden in boots. One horse with navicular was booted on walks in the very beginning.
Foundations of my work are the principles of the genuine Natural Trim by Jaime Jackson. These guidelines are based on Jackson’s research on the free roaming wild horses of the US Great Basin. As I live and work in the wet coastal climate of Nova Scotia, Canada (with snow on the ground for at least three months of the year as well as lots of rain and mud) this book is a testimony to Jackson’s wild horse model despite of the climate.
My book Hoof, Body & Soul is published in three parts.

Case studies presenting the results with horses under my care for now up to twenty years.
The biggest wrong doing to our domesticated horses and donkeys in the first place is raising and keeping them on unnatural grounds, deep bedding, wooden floors, wood shavings, grass or rubber mats. Their hooves need to be exposed to firm and abrasive grounds within the hour of birth and to move in order to finish and finalize after birth outside of the mother's womb. Otherwise the vicious cycle of pain and suffering is never going to end.
I am resting my case.
