Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 8, case #8

Author: Gudrun Buchhofer

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves

Case # 8

Another example of the unreleased newborn fetal hoof is this sixteen-year-old pony mare. She had crushed "pop can" feet in the front and upright "pop can" feet in the hind with minor sub-clinical symptoms of laminitis (there were no severe laminitic ripples, no blood in the white line as well as no stretched or destroyed white line). I am very confident that I was dealing with neglected hooves from years of confinement on saw dust, lack of hoof care, lack of movement, lack of blood circulation, lack of natural grounds and lack of moisture. The hooves were extremely dried out and shut down in the back. The false heels were contracted inwards.

I was able to work on this little girl for a year and a half. She changed from being hardly able to move (with those pop can hind hooves) to canter. However, each time when I came back for trimming the hooves had closed up again. There was no exposure to the outdoors or moisture, no walks etc. The hooves did some healing but the continuing exposure to saw dust and lack of movement was counter productive to my work.

The left front of this pony is a good example of what I experience a lot: the healing journey takes the hoof all the way back to the moment in time of birth first and goes through the upright stage a foal is born with. After that, the scenario would turn around and the variant capsule angle-of-growth would be completed in the back while the hoof capsule would shorten over time. Sadly, I did not have more time on this case.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
