Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 9, case #9

Author: Gudrun Buchhofer

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves

Case # 9

This pony mare in her mid thirties lived in the same environment as the previous case. I was called because of “assumed” laminitis as the pony had difficulties to move.

We made a few minor corrections but her diet did not really suggest any serious risks for laminitis. The hoof pieces I sawed off did not show any symptoms of laminitis either. No blood, no stretched white line and no severe laminitic ripples.

The pony had no access to green grass and lived indoors. I consider these hooves uncared-for and exposed to unnatural grounds. The back of the hooves had shut down. Any previous trimming attempts failed because it was not about shortening those toes. It was about healing the back of the foot. All four hooves were still trying to activate true heels — waiting since the hour of birth.

During the healing via divergent hooves the feet showed me that initially they were upright (the way all foals are born with) and deformed from there because they had no chance to do the initial wear (about half the length of the hoof capsule) right after birth and complete the variant capsule angle-of-growth.

I worked on this case for nine months. The pony was galloping around when I saw her last.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
