Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 10, case #10

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.
What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.
CHAPTER 1
Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries
Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves
Case # 10
Barney
trimmed from August 2020 until present June 2025
Foals (horses and donkeys) are born with long unfinished hooves. Starting within the first few hours after birth (as per nature’s example) they need to wear down about half of the foot outside of the mother’s womb. This is also the moment in time to activate true heels, to finalize the back of the foot in order to complement the variant capsule angle-of-growth. This projected process did not happen in Barney’s case as he spent the first months of his life in a stall on shavings. Mini donkey Barney came to my clients with slipper feet (fronts and hinds) when he was eight months old.

I took over Barney’s hoof care as the second trimmer. The first farrier trimmed once. After a consultation with me the owners prepared a paddock and the floor of a run-in shelter with crusher dust. A little later they added a track for Barney and his buddy Fred. The entire track got textured with crusher dust as well.
The surface of the Paddock Paradise Track System, the paddock and the floor of the run-in-shelter is all crusher dust.
As a foal Barney had to go already through healing and repair work due to his unfinished feet. His hooves were not supporting the bone column of his legs. The back of the hooves was atrophied.

The photos are self explanatory what a genuine natural trim in combination with a relative natural diet as well as movement on the right surfaces can achieve. The positive influence on Barney’s body is noticeable as well as he was pretty compressed.

Barney and his buddy Fred have free choice good quality hay, salt and loose organic minerals. There is no green grass in their lives except a mouth full here and there on their daily walks.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
