Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 11, case #11

Author: Gudrun Buchhofer

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves

Case # 11

Jasper

trimmed from April 2018 until present 2025

When I started trimming Jasper in April 2018 I found him with slipper feet in the front and standing on the back of his collapsed heels. His right front and both hinds travelled to the right. The left front counter balanced.

April 2018 — standing on the back of his collapsed heels

Jasper is a working farm donkey. His exact age is unknown, but he must be at least twenty years old. Jasper’s job is to protect the calves from coyotes. So, over the summer he is out on pasture with the cattle at night. During the day he mostly hides in the barn to get away from the flies and nibbles on hay. However, during the grass season he is over weighed. No dietary changes were made due to his job. I never experienced him lame once in seven years. There were laminitic ripples on the outside walls as sub-clinical symptoms of laminitis but there was no separation of the white line or blood in it.

But I did find the same hollow (or rotten) spot in the toe of the fronts as I have seen in other slipper feet (unfinished baby hooves grown aimless). It is a hollow spot where the tip of the foal hoof curled up as the toe wall never got worn down after birth and the animal was still waiting for the back of the foot to be activated.

August 2019 — He used to hold his fronts narrow based and knock-kneed. The situation was very hard on his joints.

Please excuse the mud and cow manure on Jasper's hooves and legs. The photos are real and raw. After all, he is a working donkey.

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.

Case # 12

Mister -- trimmed from 03/2013 – 01/2023

Mini donkey Mister was under my hoof care wings for ten years. I worked on his unfinished foal hooves (which had turned into slipper toes when I met him) until he passed in his thirties. Here are the highlights from his healing journey:
