Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 12, case #12

Author: Gudrun Buchhofer

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Deformed hooves /crooked feet / wry feet / twisted hooves / slipper feet / folded hooves / flared hooves

Case # 12

Mister

trimmed from 03/2013 – 01/2023

Mini donkey Mister was under my hoof care wings for ten years. I worked on his unfinished foal hooves (which had turned into slipper feet) until he passed in his thirties. Here are the highlights from his healing journey:

Mister used to hold his fronts narrow based and knock-kneed. He braced on the medial side of the hoof capsule and both fronts were deformed slipper feet. In the hind Mister used to stand on his tiptoes and his hind legs camped out of the body line. He toed out and braced more with his right hind. The situation of camping out brought his bump up high and caused unnatural muscle effort in the hind end and throughout his body.

As his hooves naturalized his back was more level around the five-year-mark.

Mister worked through the healing of atrophied toe walls, white lines, bars, frogs, bulbs, internal structures as well as stress cracks and bruised soles.

There was a major breakthrough in 2018 around the five-year-mark. His bulbs began to finalize and the white line showed healthy connected tissue.

Left front in 2017 is still showing the hollow spot in the toe from where the slipper toe curled up at some point

Right front in 2018

The variant capsule angle-of-growth in the back of the hooves finalized around the eight-year-mark.

Note: Mister was off green grass pasture for the last ten years of his life and on hay only.

Thank you for the teaching, Mister ♥

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
