Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible

Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 27, case #27

Author: Gudrun Buchhofer

Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.

What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.

CHAPTER 1

Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries

Navicular syndrome

In all my cases with diagnosed navicular syndrome or caudal heel pain syndrome (either a diagnose for one front foot or both front feet) the back of the foot did not support the bone column. Frogs, bulbs, internal structures were underdeveloped or atrophied. This always applied to all four hooves (the horses just compensate differently with the hinds than the fronts). Case after case. The weakness in the other (not diagnosed) front hoof as well as the hind hooves stayed unnoticed, not diagnosed, unmentioned. (Also see case # 25 Jet).

Case # 27

The Quarter Horse gelding was diagnosed with navicular syndrome in both fronts. He had previously self-bull-nosed his own front hooves (worn the front feet short).

The weight bearing points of the heels were too far forward (the back of the hoof did not support the bone column).

The gelding was not able to straighten his front legs. The fetlock joints were stressed as well as the neck and shoulders.

I found the back of the foot atrophied in all four hooves as the fundamental issue. I activated frogs, bulbs, internal structures and true heels to grow in from further back. He stopped bracing on the front of the hoof capsules and I allowed the bull-nosed toes to grow back.

The horse was under my hoof care for only seven months when he moved back to his owner. He was lame free in the paddock. He lived another ten years. ♥

Stay tuned for the upcoming cases (under my care for up to 20 years) in this blog series as a replacement for the unpublished part III: Mission Impossible of my trilogy Hoof, Body & Soul.

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
