Hoof, Body & Soul, Part III: Mission Impossible, unedited, by Gudrun Buchhofer. Blog 28, case #28
Author: Gudrun Buchhofer
Dedicated to all the horses suffering because of an unfinished foundation — their hooves.
What did all my client horses over the last 20+ years have in common? They needed to heal from atrophy of the back of the foot as well as other atrophied hoof structures.
CHAPTER 1
Atrophy, the fundamental cause for most all hoof pathology and upper body injuries
Navicular syndrome
Case # 28
Dee
trimmed from January 2019 until May 2023
Clients of mine acquired Dee, a Horse Quarter mare in her teens, with apparent discomfort in the back of the left front. She held this leg buckled. She had worn her toes pathologically short.
Left front pre-trim January 2019
The back of all four hooves was undeveloped with atrophied frogs and bulbs, weak internal structures and lack of true heels. The hooves were not able to support the bone column.
March 2019
Dee camped out of her body line with the hinds, placing her weight on the toes in the hinds as well. Her hind fetlock joints were weak. Dee had extreme muscle tension throughout her body from head to tail bone. The muscle tension even affected her tail hair. At the nine-month-mark into the healing all tail hair past the end of the tail bone broke off. Then the tail hair started to grow a new with "happier" hair.
As I activated the back of the foot, Dee stopped the wearing of her toes. I allowed the toes to grow back.
Left front post-trim May 2023
Dee had a few Reiki sessions with me. She was trail ridden entirely barefoot in a treeless saddle ever since I started her hoof care. In the last four years of her life she lived outside 24/7 with a companion horse.
March 2021
True heel emerged from further back on the lateral side of the right hind in June 2021.

Sadly, Dee passed away suddenly in May 2023. ♥

Q: Why do we need to change the upbringing of our baby horses and donkeys? A: To prevent senseless suffering.
